summary
Personal Responsibility and Hope
This makes repentance meaningful. The person who chose wrong can return. God promises forgiveness to the sincere.
interpretation
Sin in Islam
Sin harms the heart, other people, and society. It does not diminish God. Accountability belongs to the person who acted. God knows that person's knowledge, intention, ability, and circumstances.

interpretation
Sin in Christianity
Islam rejects transferred guilt and the need for an innocent sacrifice. Adam sinned, repented, and was forgiven (Quran 2:37). His descendants begin responsible for their own lives.

No clerical confession is required. Quran 39:53 tells those who have greatly wronged themselves not to despair. God forgives sins. Quran 25:70 adds that repentance, faith, and good action can transform bad deeds into good.

interpretation
Repentance in Christianity (Metanoia)
The Parable of the Prodigal Son in Luke presents repentance through a returning son. He wastes his inheritance, returns in poverty, and asks forgiveness. His father welcomes him, restores him, and celebrates. The story presents repentance as pardon and restored relationship.
Christian teaching centers Christ's death and resurrection. Believers confess sins to God (1 John 1:9) and trust Christ's atoning work. Paul calls those in Christ new creations. Repentance remains a continuing process.
Key passage
Bible
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.1 John 1:9
Version: World English Bible
argument
Mercy Is Greater Than a Ledger
Deeds still matter. Faith changes conduct, and God judges justly. Mercy and responsibility belong together. Repentance receives mercy, and repaired behavior shows that it is real.
interpretation
Spiritual Transformation After Repentance
Christian theology speaks of being "born again" or becoming "a new creation." The old life passes away. The new life in Christ brings a changed relationship with God and a call to righteous living. It is not perfection; Christians still face moral struggle.
Both traditions connect repentance with community. Islam restores the repentant person's standing among believers. Christianity may include public acknowledgment and reintegration. The goal is reconciliation with God and the community.
