Overview
Understanding The Problem of Evil
summary
More Than One Problem
The evidential problem asks whether the amount and distribution of suffering make God unlikely. There is also an existential problem. A bereaved parent is not mainly asking for a syllogism. Compassion, help, lament, and patient presence must accompany inquiry.

Human Freedom and Moral Evil
This addresses some moral evil, not earthquakes, childhood disease, or animal pain. It does not excuse wrongdoers. Islamic teaching holds people accountable within God's sovereignty. Muslim schools explain that relation in different ways.

A Stable World and Natural Suffering
This explains some risk, but not why each tragedy occurred. The question remains whether God could create a valuable world with less suffering. Theists offer possibilities such as unknown links, virtue, freedom, and goods beyond this life. They should also admit the limits of human knowledge. A framework is not a private explanation for one child's pain.

Life as Test—Without Blaming the Sufferer
Islam does not permit labeling every illness or disaster a punishment. An event may be a trial, a result of injustice, a feature of embodied life, or a matter whose purpose is unknown. Prophets suffered. When someone hurts, the first duties are mercy, aid, justice, and prayer.
Key passages
Quran
[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed - and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving -
Quran 67:2
Translation: Saheeh International
Quran
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient,
Quran 2:155

Limited Perspective Is Not a Complete Answer
Mystery can also be abused. If every difficulty receives only 'God knows best,' belief may ignore evidence. The limited claim is that ignorance of a reason does not prove its absence. Horrendous suffering still carries evidential weight and must not be explained away.
Key passage
Quran
And [mention] when Moses said to his servant, "I will not cease [traveling] until I reach the junction of the two seas or continue for a long period."
Quran 18:60
Translation: Saheeh International
argument
Resurrection Changes the Moral Horizon
This answer depends on resurrection; it cannot be assumed merely to rescue theism. Future compensation never makes preventable suffering acceptable. Belief in judgment strengthens the duty to protect victims and confront oppressors.
Key passages
Quran
And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all. And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountant.
Quran 21:47
Translation: Saheeh International
Quran
Indeed, Allah does not do injustice, [even] as much as an atom's weight; while if there is a good deed, He multiplies it and gives from Himself a great reward.
Quran 4:40
Translation: Saheeh International

Where the Case Stands
Some people find suffering supports atheism. Others see objective evil and the need for justice as signs beyond an indifferent universe. Neither reaction should be caricatured. Islam permits lament alongside trust. Faith does not call evil good. It opposes evil while holding that it will not escape judgment.
