Why This History Matters

The Crucifixion and Death of Jesus
The Quran gives a different revealed judgment. Jesus was not killed or crucified as claimed. God raised him (Quran 4:157-158). Muslims differ about what people saw. The text does not require one detailed substitution story. The firm belief is that the plot failed and Jesus will return. History reports human sources. Muslims accept the Quran as God's correction.
Key passage
Quran
And [for] their saying, "Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah." And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain.

The Resurrection Claim and Earliest Testimony
History can show sincere belief. It cannot prove a miracle by ordinary method. Christianity sees resurrection as the cross's vindication. Islam denies that Jesus was killed and then raised. God rescued and raised His Messiah.
history
Formation of the Jerusalem Church
The church kept Jewish identity and Torah. It began as a Jewish renewal movement. Persecution raised tensions. Jesus was held to be the Messiah. His status and the place of non-Jews remained disputed.
Key passage
Bible
“Men of Israel, hear these words! Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved by God to you by mighty works and wonders and signs which God did by him among you, even as you yourselves know, him, being delivered up by the determined counsel and foreknowledge of God, you have taken by the hand of lawless men, crucified and killed; whom God raised up, having freed him from the agony of death, because it was not possible that he should be held by it.Acts 2:22-24

history
Paul and the Expansion Beyond Judaism
He centered salvation on Jesus' death and resurrection. Christians see a faithful apostle. Muslims note that Paul did not accompany Jesus. They ask whether his vision-based theology preserved Jesus' call to worship God and keep God's commandments. The question requires evidence, not caricature.
history
Persecution and Spread
Before Decius and Diocletian, persecution was usually local. It caused suffering but did not stop growth. Sincerity alone cannot prove later theology came from God.
history
Constantine's Legalization and the Council of Nicaea
Most Christians see Nicaea as faithful. Islam asks why God's identity required a fourth-century council and a non-biblical term. Quran 5:117 has Jesus teach worship of Allah, 'my Lord and your Lord.'
Key passage
Quran
I said not to them except what You commanded me - to worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness.

Historical Sources and Faith Interpretations
This shows belief and institutional change. It cannot decide which text is revelation. Christians give the New Testament final authority. Muslims accept the Quran as God's correction and criterion.

Core Theological Divergences
Islam honors Jesus as Messiah, Word from God, messenger, and miracle-worker by God's permission. The Quran rejects his divinity and says his enemies did not kill him (Quran 2:87; 4:157-158). The issue is worship: Jesus or the One God.
Later creeds required debate and institutions. Islam teaches that God restored the simple message: Jesus was God's servant and messenger. Salvation begins with worshiping God alone.
Key passage
Quran
And We did certainly give Moses the Torah and followed up after him with messengers. And We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear proofs and supported him with the Pure Spirit. But is it [not] that every time a messenger came to you, [O Children of Israel], with what your souls did not desire, you were arrogant? And a party [of messengers] you denied and another party you killed.
