Three Questions for Every Passage
scripture
John 1:1: The Word Was God
This is a strong Christian text, but it is the narrator's prologue, not a sentence Jesus spoke. The same Gospel has Jesus call the Father "the only true God" and himself the one sent by Him (John 17:3). Muslims therefore read John 1:1 through biblical agency and wisdom language; "a god" remains a weak minority translation.
scripture
John 8:58: Before Abraham, 'I Am'
scripture
John 10:30: 'I and the Father Are One'
Jesus then cites Psalm 82:6 and calls himself the one whom the Father sanctified and sent. Some traditional interpreters understand its "gods" as human judges; others read heavenly beings, as the USCCB notes on Psalm 82 explain. John 10 uses the passage to answer a charge of blasphemy. Muslims read Jesus's language of being sent as consistent with a uniquely authorized Messiah. Christians read the argument as supporting his greater status. The disputed identity of Psalm 82's "gods" should not be used as an undisputed proof either way.
scripture
John 20:28: 'My Lord and My God'
scripture
Philippians 2:6-8: Form, Equality, and Obedience
scripture
Colossians 2:9: The Fullness of Deity
Colossians alone cannot decide whether the author means identity with God or the full presence of God's gifts and authority in His Messiah. Jesus's dependence and prayer remain part of the evidence.
scripture
Titus 2:13: God and Savior
This is significant evidence for the Pastoral Epistles, but not a saying of Jesus. Critical scholars dispute Pauline authorship of Titus, while traditional Christians defend it. The verse shows early use of divine titles for Jesus; it does not erase the Gospel record of Jesus worshiping and being sent by God.
scripture
The Quran's Clear Account of Jesus
These verses provide the revealed framework for Muslims: exalted titles honor God's Messiah, while the distinction between God and His messenger remains clear.

Quran
O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.

Quran
Indeed, the example of Jesus to Allah is like that of Adam. He created Him from dust; then He said to him, "Be," and he was.
Quran 3:59

Quran
They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary" while the Messiah has said, "O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Indeed, he who associates others with Allah - Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.

[Jesus] said, "Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.

Quran
The Messiah, son of Mary, was not but a messenger; [other] messengers have passed on before him. And his mother was a supporter of truth. They both used to eat food. Look how We make clear to them the signs; then look how they are deluded.

Focused Questions
A: They are important Christian evidence, but their grammar and context are debated. Jesus’s prayers and dependence remain part of the evidence.
Q: How does Islam read them?
A: Islam honors Jesus as Messiah and messenger, while treating his worship of God as the clearer guide.
Q: What does the Quran say?
A: It calls Jesus God’s Messiah, word, spirit, and servant, and directs worship to God alone. The Islamic conclusion is that later titles do not overturn the prophetic distinction between God and His honored messenger.
