Overview
History, Revelation, and the Identity of Jesus
summary
What History Can and Cannot Decide
Christian writings center Jesus' death and resurrection. The Quran says his opponents did not kill or crucify him and that God raised him. These questions are connected but not identical.

What Most Historians Conclude
1. Jesus was a first-century Jewish teacher. He preached in Galilee, called for repentance, and gathered disciples.
2. Jesus was connected with John the Baptist. The Synoptic Gospels narrate his baptism, while John presents testimony without narrating it in the same way.
3. Most historians judge Roman crucifixion under Pontius Pilate the best explanation of early Christian sources. Paul's letters predate the written Gospels and center Jesus's death. The Synoptic Gospels are related, not four independent reports. Josephus and Tacitus require qualification.
These are inferences from documents. They do not prove every Passion detail or rule out divine action.

The Earliest Christian Evidence
The writings agree on the central proclamation but differ in chronology and detail. Matthew and Luke appear to use Mark, so they are not four independent eyewitness accounts. The sources matter historically and also interpret Jesus's death through faith.

Where Historical Debate Remains
These questions show why probability is not certainty. The sources come from committed communities and require careful comparison.

Jesus in the Quran
Quran 4:157 says his enemies "did not kill him, nor did they crucify him," and Quran 4:158 says God raised him. The Arabic does not identify who, if anyone, was placed on the cross. Substitution is a classical explanation, not explicit wording.
Sahih al-Bukhari 3448 and Sahih Muslim 155a teach that Jesus will return as a just judge. Islam honors him without worshiping him.
Key passages
Quran
And [for] their saying, "Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah." And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain.

[The Day] when Allah will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, remember My favor upon you and upon your mother when I supported you with the Pure Spirit and you spoke to the people in the cradle and in maturity; and [remember] when I taught you writing and wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel; and when you designed from clay [what was] like the form of a bird with My permission, then you breathed into it, and it became a bird with My permission; and you healed the blind and the leper with My permission; and when you brought forth the dead with My permission; and when I restrained the Children of Israel from [killing] you when you came to them with clear proofs and those who disbelieved among them said, "This is not but obvious magic."

O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.

They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary" while the Messiah has said, "O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Indeed, he who associates others with Allah - Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.

The Real Point of Disagreement
For Muslims, the Quran is God's revelation and can correct human reports. A historian who does not accept revelation usually gives earlier documents more weight. Each method should be stated openly.
The wider question is whether the Quran is revelation. Its case includes public preservation, tawhid, prophecy, and Muhammad's credibility.
argument
Using Historical Evidence Carefully
"Most historians think" matters, but it is not the final court for a believer. Islam encourages evidence and reflection while holding that revelation gives knowledge beyond history alone.
summary
The Islamic Conclusion
The Quran says yes. Jesus is a true Messiah and mighty messenger whom God saved, not a divine sacrifice to worship. This claim belongs to the Quran's whole case: it restores Jesus's call to worship the one God.
