Overview
Jesus's Miracles Point to God's Power
notes
Introduction
Both traditions present Jesus as a mighty healer. Islam teaches that he was a prophet empowered by God, while later Christian creeds define him as God incarnate. The source of his power is central to that disagreement.

The Question: Do Miracles Prove Divinity?
The Quran repeatedly says bi-idhnillah, 'by permission of Allah.' The New Testament describes Jesus's works as miracles 'which God did by him' (Acts 2:22). The Hebrew Bible also describes Moses, Elijah, and Elisha performing wonders, including raising the dead, without calling them divine. The issue is what the signs mean: Jesus's deity or God's endorsement of His messenger.

The Miracles in the Quran
This wording tells readers how to understand the signs. Jesus is God's chosen agent, the power is real, the messenger is honored, and the source is God. The Quran also records Jesus calling Israel to worship "Allah, my Lord and your Lord" (Quran 5:72). His miracles serve that message rather than replacing God with the messenger.

And [make him] a messenger to the Children of Israel, [who will say], 'Indeed I have come to you with a sign from your Lord in that I design for you from clay [that which is] like the form of a bird, then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird by permission of Allah. And I cure the blind and the leper, and I give life to the dead - by permission of Allah. And I inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers.

سورة المائدة · الآية ١١٠
[The Day] when Allah will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, remember My favor upon you and upon your mother when I supported you with the Pure Spirit and you spoke to the people in the cradle and in maturity; and [remember] when I taught you writing and wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel; and when you designed from clay [what was] like the form of a bird with My permission, then you breathed into it, and it became a bird with My permission; and you healed the blind and the leper with My permission; and when you brought forth the dead with My permission; and when I restrained the Children of Israel from [killing] you when you came to them with clear proofs and those who disbelieved among them said, "This is not but obvious magic."

Quran
They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary" while the Messiah has said, "O Children of Israel, worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord." Indeed, he who associates others with Allah - Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.

The Miracles in the Bible
The Bible also shows God's servants performing comparable wonders. Moses parts the sea by God's command. Elijah and Elisha raise the dead, and the apostles heal through the name and power God gives. Acts 2:22 summarizes Jesus as "a man attested to you by God" through miracles that "God did through him." This does not deny Jesus's unique rank; it identifies the giver of the power.

Do Miracles Prove Divinity?
A miracle can authenticate a messenger without making the messenger God. Jesus himself warns that signs alone are not a safe test of truth (Matthew 7:22-23), and other biblical figures perform wonders. The Quran removes the ambiguity by repeating that Jesus acted by God's permission. The prophetic conclusion is that God empowered His Messiah so people would believe and obey God.
interpretation
Common Misconceptions
Raising the dead does not make Jesus God. The Quran says the signs occurred by Allah's permission. Acts says God did them through Jesus, and Jesus says he can do nothing by himself. Elisha also raised the dead (2 Kings 4:32-35), yet was not divine. A miracle shows God's action; it does not make the human agent God.
A similar clay-bird story appears in the early, non-canonical Infancy Gospel of Thomas. Scholars discuss the parallel. Muslims understand the Quran as confirming and correcting earlier tradition, while giving the event its own theological frame: the bird came to life by Allah's permission. Miracles are common ground; the deeper Christian arguments concern the resurrection and John's portrait of Jesus.

Key Takeaways: What Jesus's Miracles Prove
notes
Frequently Asked Questions
A: Yes. It describes healing, raising the dead, the clay bird, hidden knowledge, speech from the cradle, and the heavenly table (3:49, 5:110, 5:112-115, 19:29-30). Muslims accept these as real.
Q: Do miracles prove that Jesus is God?
A: A miracle alone does not establish that its human agent is God: Elisha also raised the dead (2 Kings 4:32-35). The Quran attributes Jesus's miracles to Allah's permission, and Acts 2:22 says God worked through him. Christians read Jesus's signs within their larger belief in his divinity; John 20:30-31 gives the signs a purpose in leading readers to faith in him. Islam honors them as signs of a true messenger without directing worship to him.
Q: Which Quranic miracles lack an exact biblical parallel?
A: Jesus speaking from the cradle (19:29-30), the clay bird (3:49), and the heavenly table (5:112-115).
Q: Why repeat 'by permission of Allah'?
A: The repetition attributes the power entirely to God while honoring Jesus as His mighty messenger.
Q: Did the Quran copy a Christian legend?
A: A similar clay-bird story appears in the non-canonical Infancy Gospel of Thomas. Muslims understand the Quran as confirming and correcting earlier tradition, while stressing that the event occurred by Allah's permission.
