Overview
The Virgin Birth: A Sign of God, Not Proof That Jesus Is God
notes
A Rare Point of Deep Agreement
The Quran also honors Mary by name and through Surah Maryam. The central question is what this miracle proves about Jesus.
notes
The Real Question: What Does the Miracle Mean?
Islam draws a different conclusion. The birth is an ayah, or sign, of God's creative power. Adam had neither father nor mother, while Jesus had a mother but no father. When God decrees a thing, He says "Be," and it is. The miracle makes Jesus an honored Messiah and prophet; it does not make him divine.
history
The Sources and Their Setting
Historical method cannot verify a virginal conception directly. The question therefore depends on the reliability of revelation and the meaning each scripture gives the miracle.

The Annunciation in the Quran
Surah Maryam repeats this account and calls the birth a sign and mercy (Quran 19:17-21). Afterward, Jesus declares, "I am the servant of Allah ... He has made me a prophet" (Quran 19:30). The Quran joins miracle with servanthood: Jesus is extraordinary because God created him by command, not because God entered creation.

The Annunciation in Matthew and Luke
Muslims respect the Gospel witness to Mary's chastity while noting that a miraculous origin alone cannot establish deity. Adam's creation was even more unusual, and Luke calls Adam "son of God" (Luke 3:38) without making him divine.
Key passage
Bible
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was like this: After his mother, Mary, was engaged to Joseph, before they came together, she was found pregnant by the Holy Spirit. Joseph, her husband, being a righteous man, and not willing to make her a public example, intended to put her away secretly. But when he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don’t be afraid to take to yourself Mary, your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She shall give birth to a son. You shall call his name Jesus, for it is he who shall save his people from their sins.” Now all this has happened, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall give birth to a son. They shall call his name Immanuel”; which is, being interpreted, “God with us.”Matthew 1:18-23

Common Misconceptions
"Islam diminishes Mary." Mary is the only woman named in the Quran, and Surah Maryam bears her name. The Quran calls her chosen above the women of the worlds (Quran 3:42) and presents her as a model of devotion (Quran 66:12).
"A child with no human father must be the Son of God." The Quran answers with Adam, who had neither father nor mother (Quran 3:59). A miracle shows God's power; it does not make a created person divine. Luke names Gabriel, while the Quran calls him "Our Spirit" (Quran 19:17). Muslim commentators identify the same messenger.
