Overview
The Question in Brief
This does not mean every biblical sentence is false. The Quran confirms truth in earlier revelation, criticizes specific distortions, and judges disputed beliefs.

The Christian Preservation Claim
The Muslim question is not whether God can preserve revelation. It is whether these promises identify every later biblical book and reading as perfectly protected when manuscripts, canons, and Gospel accounts differ.

Earlier Communities Were Entrusted With Revelation
The Quran accuses some people of writing a text and then claiming it came from God (2:79). It also criticizes twisted words, hidden truth, and forgotten reminders. These are specific charges, not a claim that no truth remains in earlier scripture.
Key passages
Quran
So woe to those who write the "scripture" with their own hands, then say, "This is from Allah," in order to exchange it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn.
Quran 2:79

Quran
Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light. The prophets who submitted [to Allah] judged by it for the Jews, as did the rabbis and scholars by that with which they were entrusted of the Scripture of Allah, and they were witnesses thereto. So do not fear the people but fear Me, and do not exchange My verses for a small price. And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed - then it is those who are the disbelievers.

Jeremiah 8:8 and the Scribes
The verse should not prove more than it says. It does show the Bible criticizing authorities who turn written revelation into falsehood, whether through the pen, teaching, or both.
Key passage

The Quran Invites a Coherence Test
For Muslims, the Quran's consistent monotheism is central evidence. It confirms earlier prophets while correcting doctrines that make a human messenger divine or transfer one person's guilt to another.
Key passage
Quran
Then do they not reflect upon the Qur'an? If it had been from [any] other than Allah, they would have found within it much contradiction.
Quran 4:82

A Distinct Promise for the Final Revelation
The verse need not stand alone as historical proof. Readers can compare it with early manuscripts, public recitation, memorization, the Uthmanic written tradition, and canonical readings. The theological promise and historical case support one another.
Key passage
Quran
Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur'an and indeed, We will be its guardian.

What Tahrif Means
Classical scholars differed over its extent. The careful Islamic position is not that every verse in today's Bible was rewritten. It is that earlier revelation is no longer available as the final, fully reliable criterion. Truth remains, but it must be judged by the Quran.

The Christian Response
They do not remove every difficulty. Some passages are absent from the earliest manuscripts. Christian traditions recognize different canons, and the Gospels sometimes give different accounts of the same event. A recoverable text still requires a decision about which books are revelation and which interpretation is true.

Why God Allowed Human Failure
Guidance was never extinguished. Prophets, faithful believers, and surviving truth continued to call people to God. The final revelation confirmed what was true, exposed distortions, and received a different promise of preservation.

What Islam Does Not Claim
The precise claim is this: the Torah and Gospel were true revelations. The present collection preserves some of that truth alongside human transmission and interpretation. The Quran is the final authority for distinguishing between them.
