Scripture and Trinitarian Interpretation
The same texts show Jesus distinguishing himself from God and praying to the Father. He says the Father is greater and that his words are not from himself (John 14:10). 'One' in John 10 can express unity of purpose, and 'image of God' need not mean identity with God. No passage states the later formula of three coequal persons in one essence.
The clearest older English proof text for three-in-one is the Comma Johanneum at 1 John 5:7. It is absent from the earliest Greek manuscripts and is treated by modern textual critics as a later addition. This does not remove every Christian argument, but it shows why the doctrine is constructed by interpretation rather than read from one unambiguous teaching of Jesus.

Islamic Perspective: Tawhid (Divine Unity)
This is not merely a philosophical preference. It directs worship. No prophet, angel, saint, or divine 'person' shares God's right to prayer or ultimate obedience. Muslims honor Jesus as Messiah and messenger precisely by worshiping the One whom Jesus worshiped.

[He is] Creator of the heavens and the earth. He has made for you from yourselves, mates, and among the cattle, mates; He multiplies you thereby. There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.

Quranic References to Jesus and the Critique of Trinitarianism
Christians do not mean that God reproduced physically, and a fair Muslim argument should not say they do. The disagreement is deeper: Christians place Jesus within the divine identity, while Islam says that even the greatest Messiah remains God's worshiping servant. Miracles performed by God's permission and honored titles do not transfer the Creator's right to worship to a creature.
Key passages
Quran
O People of the Scripture, do not commit excess in your religion or say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a soul [created at a command] from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.
Quran 4:171

Quran
They have certainly disbelieved who say, "Allah is the third of three." And there is no god except one God. And if they do not desist from what they are saying, there will surely afflict the disbelievers among them a painful punishment.
Quran 5:73

argument
Christian Response to Islamic Critique
The Muslim reply is not that mystery is false. It is that revelation should not require worship through a formula Jesus never plainly taught when his own worship and dependence point to one God. Later church authority cannot replace the prophets' clear call to one God. The Quran preserves transcendence and nearness together: God is merciful and responsive without becoming human or sharing His divinity.
