Why Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa Matter in Islam
Key passage
Quran
Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.

What the Name Al-Aqsa Refers To
Knowing the terms prevents a common mistake: the gold-domed building is the Dome of the Rock, not the Qibli prayer hall. Both stand within the wider Al-Aqsa sanctuary. Terminology can be politically contested, so careful writers should state which building or area they mean.

The Isra and Mi'raj in Islamic Sources
The Prophet said that a special journey for worship is undertaken to three mosques: al-Masjid al-Haram, his mosque in Medina, and Al-Aqsa (Sahih al-Bukhari 1189). Sahih Muslim 525b also records that Muslims faced Jerusalem for sixteen or seventeen months before the prayer direction changed to the Kaaba. These are strong and precise foundations for Al-Aqsa's importance in Islam.
notes
Sanctity Does Not Cancel Justice
Quran 22:40 mentions monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in a passage about people expelled from their homes and the protection of worship. It is an Islamic ethical foundation, not a modern property map or a substitute for historical and legal evidence. Questions about archaeology, access, administration, or sovereignty require their own reliable sources.

Quran
[They are] those who have been evicted from their homes without right - only because they say, "Our Lord is Allah." And were it not that Allah checks the people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of Allah is much mentioned. And Allah will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.
